the public beach

Recently I discovered the only public beach in Beirut.
It is said to be rarely used in summer, which is quite astonishing (look at the picture!).
Most people prefer private beaches, which are kind of more exclusive...
There was an attempt to close the public one, but luckily this endeavor could still be circumvented.
I would definitively join the group of opponents!
In warm winter times only some children and Russian guys make it into the water, as I could observe in the end of December.
Also to observe: some couples that are finding quite places at the flank of the hill, and a soccer player training at the beach.
And: the sunset, of course!

  1. Also known as a gay hangout, and a place in summer where you will find many low income traditional families with women fully dressed and wearing scarf. They are not welcomed elsewhere and they are not welcoming female wearing "light" swimwear. Well, you can try...

Add to this the facts that the municipality of Beirut is not really taking care of the place, that most Lebanese love to have the feeling of exclusivity given by private beach (and costly entry fee) and that private operators have illegally - but with the tacit agreement of the State - occupied most of the seashore along the Lebanese coast.
